Beauty products and other artifacts such as a hot comb and a hair pomade tin from 1950’s African American material culture, sit along side an iconic portrait of Madame CJ Walker in untitled (#4). Walker, America’s first self-made female millionaire, provided black women with alternative technologies for grooming their hair. To view the contents, one must look at them as reflected in the mirror in the back of the piece while also viewing oneself.
